Chapter 14

The Not-So-Merry Men

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, 1382

Because it was dark when they landed, Caleb held Sandia close and pressed a finger to her lips while he got oriented and his eyes adjusted.

He really liked the way she clutched at his clothes but did his best not to allow her to distract him at the moment. There was no time for play until he knew where they’d landed.

They were surrounded by the sound of men snoring mingled with the sounds of nocturnal wildlife. A few torches dimly lit the area around them.

Caleb and Sandia had just appeared in the middle of a band of robbers during their slumber-time. Great.

Sandia gasped, and Caleb quickly covered her mouth with the palm of his hand. “Shh,” he whispered right beside her ear.

Knowing she would obey, he let go of her and began tiptoeing over and around the sleeping bodies. Caleb turned and motioned for Sandia to follow him once he found a safe way around them.

“Are these real bandits of Sherwood Forest?” she whispered as she worked her way around the men.

He nodded and put a finger to his own lips, reiterating the importance of remaining quiet. Clearly, Sandia wasn’t taking this little jaunt seriously enough, and Caleb immediately began to think this was a bad idea.

“Look, they really do carry bows and wear Lincoln green!” she said, pointing.

He waved his hand at her to hush and signal that they needed to get outta there quick.

“Okay, Okay...I’m coming,” she said, making her way around the last few men.

Caleb had been listening for any change in the snoring to signal if one of them had awoken. His heart skipped a beat when one man grunted and rolled over, but then he quickly settled into a deeper slumber.

There must’ve been about twenty men in all, and they didn’t look like the friendly Robin Hood sort. This was one reason he’d been unsure about collecting bark from the Major Oak tree; however, if he’d chosen a coin from the era, it could take him to any number of different places, perhaps even places that were more dangerous. The bark had seemed like a safe enough option at the time, but that was when he was alone. Being responsible for a city girl was something entirely different.

When Sandia had almost cleared the last of the sleeping men, Caleb could finally breathe easy. He turned to come face to face with a tower of a man. Great.

“Where do you fink you’re goin’?” the beast asked in a very thick British accent. Caleb kicked himself mentally. Of course there’d be someone on night watch. What an idiot, he thought.

Sandia was so startled by
